How is anxiety different from stress?
Anxiety involves feelings of worry, nervousness, and unease that don’t fade even without an obvious stressor. With stress, there is normally a clear-cut trigger such as work pressure, chronic illness, or relationship strife. If that situation improves, your stress also improves.
With anxiety, your worry and unease continue even after a stressful situation ends.
For people with anxiety disorders, the feelings of stress, worry, and fear become intrusive and disruptive. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health issue in Americans today.
There are several different diagnoses for anxiety disorders, with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) being the most common. Others include Social Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Separation Anxiety Disorder, and phobias, such as Agoraphobia — feeling afraid to leave home or be in public.
What are the symptoms of anxiety disorders?
Anxiety affects you both mentally and physically. Common symptoms include:
- Feelings of fear
- Feelings of dread
- Restlessness
- Nervousness
- Agitation
- Feelings of impending danger
- Feelings of impending danger or doom
- Heart racing
- Difficulty breathing
- Upset stomach
Anxiety symptoms aren’t exactly the same for every person, but what all cases of anxiety have in common is a challenging impact on your life.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
If your anxiety symptoms become overwhelming, you may experience relationship conflict, career problems, or other serious disruptions in your life. These are all signs that you might benefit from support.
If you're not sure whether anxiety affects your life in a challenging way, you can explore the topic during a consultation with Anne at the Midwest Center for Transformational Change PLC.
What is the treatment for anxiety?
At the Midwest Center for Transformational Change PLC, Anne uses three robust, evidence-based approaches: Satir Transformational Systemic Therapy (Satir Model) which is fully inclusive of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR®).
The alliance you form with your therapist forms the foundation for working with the feelings that have become overwhelming. You will develop a transformed relationship with yourself physically and emotionally, reclaiming a sense of safety, comfort and joy in your daily life.
Many who receive treatment from the Center no longer carry an anxiety diagnosis when they are ready for discharge.
Feelings and sensations that have become troubling will dissipate more quickly as you learn more effective ways to respond to them. Your therapist will share new tools that support your self reliance during and after healing and support you in personalizing your own.
