What are the symptoms of depression?
Depression affects your life in many ways. Common symptoms include:
- Sadness
- Feelings of emptiness
- Feelings of hopelessness
- Feelings of guilt regarding past events or issues
- Pessimistic approach to life
- Obsessing over problems, events, or issues from your past
- Frustration, irritability, and angry outbursts
- Withdrawing from the people you love
- Inability to feel pleasure from things you usually enjoy
- Sleep changes, such as insomnia or sleeping more than usual
- Lack of energy or persistent fatigue
- Changes in your weight (loss or gain)
- Difficulty thinking clearly
- Moving or speaking slower than usual
- Increased fidgeting, such as wringing your hands
- Preoccupation with death
- Thoughts of self-harm or ending your life
- Increase in risky or harmful behaviors
Most people have depressive episodes, times in which depression symptoms occur most of the time and persist for days, months, or longer. Left untreated, depression is likely to worsen and lead to more severe symptoms, including risk to life.
When do I need help for depression?
